NO MAN'S LAND - THE TERRITORY BETWEEN THE TRENCHES
No man's land was left unoccupied or under dispute due to fear and uncertainty.
Mid November 1914 - Because of shelling (To watch a video about shelling, click here) the territory between the opposing front trenches was marked with huge craters. Almost all vegetation was destroyed. To slow down any rapid advances by the enemy, both sides would try to fill this land with barbed wire whenever they could. Movement in this area was almost impossible due to long range rifles and machine guns.
